lyrics

my body was curled
around yours like a fern
as you breathed into slumber
and the summer rain and thunder
so riotous and loud
it kept us hiding under covers
from the leaky roof above us
and the flooded basement floor

but my heart has learned
all the swears in its new language
I keep trying to wash it out
in the shadows of my self doubts

and I see it in your frame
all that sisterly abandon
you've got it pouring from your veins
like our gutters filled with raindrops

so bring in the rosemary
it's gonna frost hard tonight
I see it in the light and how it's dropping 'neath the treetops
and I've always had a sense
of when to stay and when to stay put
and I'm sorry for the bumps on this potholed unpaved highway

but my heart has learned
all the swears in its new language
I keep trying to wash it out
in the shadows of my self doubts
and I see it in your frame
all that daughterly abandon
you've got it stopped up in your veins
like our sidewalks deep in snowbanks

and there's nothing but the sound
of the shaking antique windows
blowing in the wind
of our unmoved into bedroom
it's been a hundred million years
on the edge of something crucial
and I wish I had you there
on this lone event horizon
